John's personality was so enormous that he lit up any social occasion, and everyone loved to hear him telling – maybe, re-telling is more appropriate - classic jokes which made you fall about with laughter, even though you’d heard them a dozen times before.
 
As a couple, John and Monica were always magnificent hosts, and the Constable generosity made  an invitation such an event to look forward to. The last time we saw John was at his big birthday party, at which he was on the sort of form which made him, as always, the centre of everyone’s attention.
 
It was occasions such as this – and our lovely dinners together in Tenerife – which typified John’s huge impact on us and everyone around him.
 
John was a magnificent man. We shall miss him so much.
